March 09, 2003 -

sped up the noo joisey turnpike only to wait ages at the holland tunnel.. stopped at the best natural foods store on hudson street for some yoghurt-covered cranberries and veggie bootie...yeah we made it to the party in time... free beer and margaritas for all and thats what we did.. my guest flirted with the bartender as i soaked up the mafia white candles and sounds of dj foetus.. jim thirwell spinning peaches and daf and the yeah yeah yeahs album.. the sped up a few songs which is always a good thing.. met up with the record label guy who got me into this artsy fartsy mess.. thanked him and talked concerts, like the one i saw two nights ago -

liquid liquid and out hud.. best fucking show this year, well dance-wise at least.. liquid liquid broke up in 1984 and along with ESG were on the 99 records label and put out most danceable no wave in new york so good that the beasties rereleased all the out of print stuff on grand royal.. and then dj shadow put out more on his mo wax label.. yeah they rock.. kinda new got the recognition till now and its sad cause bands like out hud, !!!, the rapture, moving units, and all those other dub punk disco bands are borrowing heavily from liquid liquid.. yes they had 2 drummers, a bassist and a vocalist who played all sorts of world instruments and more drums.. spazzed out in the front row, energized and never wanting these sounds to stop, surround by old men and their camcorders and some guy drawing cartoons behind me..

right.. back to last night at the party.. stratford 4 played us some psychedelic tunes by way of san francisco and feedback.. low lights and name checks for their favorite bands on the new song "telephone" .. we got six songs and head back out toward irving place and the warm night... a quick cup of coffee and goofiness.. today is the nyc debut of the riot grrrl documentary "don't need you" and i am missing it as i type.. its playing at the new york underground film festival. here's what they say bout it:

"Hey, remember the 90s? Remember Riot Grrl? Through interviews with Allison Wolf, Corin Tucker, Kathleen Hanna, and other key players in the inception of Riot Grrrl, Don't Need You investigates the motivation and mutual inspiration behind how and why they got organized, Don't Need You "tells the story of Riot Grrrl and how this feminist movement evolved into an underground network of education and self-awareness through music, writing, and a women friendly community... It explores the circumstances that led to Riot Grrl and the aftermath of the movement."
